Fact/Fiction

  1. Critique:

The choice to go with black and white helped translate these images as a historical storie rather than a modern one. Personally, my favorite image is the scientist photo. The crop shows just enough information, yet not too much. It keeps the viewer's attention focused on the topic of the river rather than the surrounding elements of the environment. Also, the posing, shadow, and pipe are all beneficial elements within the photo. The figures seem naturally posed, making the photo appear as if it is the product of documentation rather than staging. The pipe gives it an industrial feel, which makes me reference the idea of pollution that is being dumped in the river. Lastly, the shadow cast from the male pushes the idea of science fiction for me simply because it extends from his feet, making him look more like a creature himself.

The fishing photo could have been enhanced by replacing the rat with something that looks less toy-like. You could even do this digitally with ease since you are working in black and white. Furthermore, I feel that the pointing of the finger towards the creature isn't really needed. The viewer's attention will go to the fish or creature without the help of this type of directional device.

  2. Good idea to use black and white. Conceptually, it looks great with the plan. B-movie type, silly monster movie kind of thing.

I'll be blunt, the one thing I did hate is that everyones wearing jeans. The scientist and the monster, in my opinion, shouldn't be wearing blue jeans. I have seen this often in artwork that makes it very unbelievable.

The scientist scene is very beautiful, though. The lighting, the water, the shadows, and the industrial pipe all lend to a very interesting photograph.

  3. I agree with previous comments that the black and white add much to the picture, not only emphasizes the connection links in the serie, but it also brings a touch old you were looking for.
The photo of scientists is a great picture, by the composition, the contrast of black and white, and especially the scientist's shadow projected on the floor.

I think it's a good idea, and also something different, to use humor and a comic touch to the story, but I think if you decide to give that touch of humor you would have to incorporate some of it to the other photographs, as in some aren´t so obvious.

It's always risky to try to put in front of the camera something that donesn´t exists and make it real, it seems to hard to create the monster and photograph, it is very brave.
